Are you a Milennial?
Do you sometimes "hate" the world?
And feel frustrated, helpless and powerless?
Good news is - I GET YOU.
Bad news is - Boomers probably won't.
But I get you. More than I can put into words.
I get you and your hate. And actually feel what you're feeling too.
The thing is ... hatred often stems from deep-seated pain, pain that we were born and raised with.
Hurt that permeates every single atom of our collective unconscious.
And shame following both that hurt and that pain.
Shame that was mostly inflicted by the previous generations and then additionally boosted by our own inner judge.
Even if in a way it does seem as though we've been set up for failure by the generations preceding us.
Let me explain why not only do you have nothing to be ashamed about, but your anger and disappointment are absolutely justified.
NOT PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE (A CONSEQUENCE OF THE UNCONSCIOUS UPBRINGING)
For starters, we've been raised with values of embracing equality and appreciating collaboration. However, we entered a more ruthless job market than ever before, completely unequipped to display competitiveness that wasn't taught nor encouraged during our upbringing.
Picture a domesticated lion, nurtured in captivity and taught to see humans as allies, suddenly set free in the wild to become a hunter or prey.
Is it fair?
Of course not.
ECONOMY CRASH, UNEPLOYMENT AND IMPOSSIBLE CONDITIONS
In addition to this, most of us (if not all of us) joined the workforce amid the worst economic downturn in recent history, a crisis whose repercussions linger today, despite our lack of involvement in its cause.
We proceeded investing years and significant financial resources in pursuing degrees that were promised to secure our financial futures, yet found ourselves unemployable, competing against individuals with years, if not decades, of experience.
As one of the studies claims: "Millennials are the first in the modern era to have higher levels of student loan debt, poverty, and unemployment, and lower levels of wealth and personal income than any other generation at the same stage of life".
Then, after slowly realizing we're going to be overqualified for every job, admitted to almost none and drastically underpaid for the one we do get - we had to make peace with the fact we'll probably never own a property.
Actually, as another study claims: "Millennials buying their first homes today will pay 39% more than baby boomers taking the same step in the 1980s".
Additionally shame for us came in the lifestyle component as the trend of us living with our parents/relatives has surged, as a result of our inability to cover living expenses, even with multiple jobs, following investments in education, language skills, internships, and more.
DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND BIOCHEMISTRY BATTLING TECHNOLOGY
Not to mention that balancing the demand for focus and sharpness with the requirement to sit for extended periods, often in front of screens emitting blue light, goes against our natural biology. We're made to move more, eat less and live our life through our body, not despite it. The spike in technology and inhumane demands from the decent-paying tech jobs have pushed millenials in a deeper pool of despair.
Did I also mention that we have HIGHER RATES of depression than any other generation in history, paired with 108% more chance to die from drug abuse and around 69% more chance to die from alcohol abuse?
As we're unable to meet our core needs and live a decent life, not to mention earn a decent wage without spending multiple hours a day in front of a screen, we have turned to soothing mechanisms such as drug and alcohol, as many times they provide the perfect escapism - in addition to the nervous system regulation we so desperately seek.
In an era of information overload, we face criticism for seeking refuge in quick dopamine fixes, a coping mechanism for unmet core human needs despite technological advancements.
Depressingly, we are experiencing higher rates of depression compared to previous generations, with over 63% of functional Millennials grappling with some form of depressive symptoms.
These challenges paint a stark picture of the struggles faced by our generation, despite our efforts and aspirations. Once again, we're THE MOST DEPRESSED generation in the history of the planet.
NAVIGATING HEALTH STRUGGLES AMIDST FINANCIAL TURMOIL
We're also spiking in cancer rates: "In developed countries cancer rates for the Millennial generation are at their highest level in 30 years."
YOUR REALITY IS VERY REAL
So, NO, you're NOT MAKING STUFF UP.
And yes, you have every right to be pissed off.
Every right.
As a fellow Milennial, I hear you.
I see you.
I feel you.
You're not alone in this.
Not now, not ever.
We're in this together, and the only way to get out is to get through. TOGETHER.
How can you make sure it gets better?
Today?
Now?
One day at a time?
It's not about how many times we failed or how many times we tried just to see it's not working.
It's not about sleepless nights and sending out CVs after which radio-silence came.
It's not about working hard and seeing nothing for it.
It's not about not being where you want to be (yet).
It's about realizing you're STILL living, breathing and going through motions of life even as loads of things are stacked up against you.
It's about your choice to keep on going.
It's about your choice to give yourself love, compassion and understanding when the entire world deprives you of that.
And, do you know the best part?
Our time, your time, isn't over - it has just begun!
UNLEASH YOUR POWER: DEFYING ILLUSIONS THEY'VE CAST UPON US
The truth is - You have power.
We all do.
You have strength.
You are here for a reason.
You chose this.
You came into this world with a mission and a purpose - even if this world made it a bit difficult to remember that.
And one of the first ways to follow your destiny is to allow yourself to BE WHO YOU ARE, unapologetically.
What is your biggest desire?
How can you follow it?
What is your professional dream?
How can you follow it?
What is your project that is still just a thought at this point but still hidden deep inside of you?
How can you follow it?
Remember, despite everything you have been through you're not even at a half of your life.
Actually, according to the latest research you're probably going to live to be up to 100 (and more). 😉
So how's about feeling all that anger, sadness, disappointment and frustration and STILL DOING YOU?
That's a great start.
That's more than enough.
That's everything.
Soooo....
When are you starting?
Why not today?
